Full Job Description

Hanover are recruiting for a friendly and positive individual to join us as the General Maintenance Person based at our Dowding House development in Moffat. This permanent position involves working part-time 20 hours per week. The efforts of the General Maintenance Person is truly appreciated as the team work to ensure our residents feel safe and secure at home, living full and independent lives., As the General Maintenance Person your contributions towards our positive and professional atmosphere will include:

Gardening and Grounds Maintenance

  • To perform extensive garden maintenance of a large, landscaped area within the development, and any other grounds maintenance within the vicinity of the development ensuring the presentation of the garden and surrounding areas of the development represents the high standards as defined by Hanover Scotland.


  • Maintenance

  • To perform general repairs/maintenance within all aspects of internal and external building areas as and when required to maintain a high standard within the development.

  • To routinely check and identify any hazards whilst monitoring all public and private areas in and around the development to ensure the building is kept safe and secure.

  • To use equipment and chemicals in adherence to company standard processes.

  • To routinely assist with testing of water temperatures/water hygiene tests and any other minor plumbing maintenance as and when required ensuring all health and safety requirements within the development are completed.

  • To assist with void maintenance and complete any outstanding remedial repair jobs within the vacant properties, including but not limited to, preparing interior walls/skirting/doors for painting and or plastering. Removal of carpets/items and generally clean, ensuring the property is ready for let to minimise void rent loss.

  • To set up move and replace furniture for residents' meetings, refurbishment, or any other reason.

  • To Complete and record the outcome of routine health and safety checks on development in accordance with Hanover's procedures.

  • To adhere to health and safety standards whilst performing all aspects of the role as per the required company standard repair processes.


  • Cleaning Duties

  • Ensure a positive customer experience through diligent cleaning of all common areas according to the established cleaning schedule.

  • Ensure any entranceways are clear of debris and free of hazards.

  • Cleaning toilets and guest accommodation including shower/bath areas to ensure a high-quality professional service for guests and assist in preparations of the room when vacant.

  • Undertake the washing, and ironing of guest room linen.

  • Polish appropriate surfaces as set out in the cleaning schedule across the development.

  • Clean office equipment and desks to ensure compliance with GDPR principles if having to move paperwork and folders.

  • Promptly dispose of any waste in appropriate bins in compliance with local recycling requirements, and ensure bin area remains clean and free from discarded items.

  • Ensure the laundry area is kept safe and free from hazards, all machines are kept clean and checked to be in working order with filters and drawers regularly inspected, and machines are regularly disinfected.

  • Undertake any enhanced cleaning in response to any health-related outbreaks.

  • Monitor and maintain the stock levels of all cleaning products to ensure compliance with Health & Safety requirements.

  • Comply with Health & Safety regulations when using all cleaning products. Maintain and update the cleaning products manual as needed.

  • Ensure any equipment used such as hoovers is free of visible hazards, is safe, compliant and has undergone an annual inspection and testing process.


  • Customer Service

  • To demonstrate respect and a high level of conscientiousness towards the needs of independent, often elderly and/ or vulnerable, customers and demonstrate a willingness to understand any concerns expressed by customers ensuring a high level of service that represents Hanover's values.

  • To escalate unresolved requests or repairs that cannot be resolved to a manager to ensure excellent customer service is ongoing within the development.


  • Other

  • Participate in a flexible working environment.

  • Undertake other tasks necessary to fulfil the requirements of the role, including the use of appropriate equipment and safety measures.

  • To routinely log and report all work undertaken on a regular basis.

  • To carry out any other duty as instructed by the Development Manager

  • Demonstrable experience of empathising with and caring for the elderly.

  • Able to follow cleaning schedules and procedures.

  • A flexible approach to work with a can-do attitude.

  • Communicate effectively with basic writing skills.

  • You'll also need some ICT skills so that you can access all of your available e-learning programs as well as the company portal.


  • This role will be subject to disclosure checks and successful applicants must be able to demonstrate satisfactory reference checks.
