Biotechnology and Life Sciences Industry in Scotland

Scotland has a long and illustrious history of innovation in science and medicine and the burgeoning biotechnology and life sciences sector is the latest example . The Scottish Government has identified the industry which employs 30,000 people and is famous for the MRI scan and Dolly the Sheep as one of the key economic drivers for the future and takes a proactive approach in attracting and supporting biotechnology companies.

Scotland boasts significant clinical and academic expertise in a number of areas including stem cells, cardiovascular disease, CNS, diabetes and oncology.

In 2008 the government-backed Life Sciences Strategy was updated with the aim of consolidating and improving on the annual 8% sector growth rate. The industry was estimated then to be worth £2.8 billion per year to the Scottish economy.
