So what can you do to make your mark? Win an award, of course.

There are just a few days left until the Law Society of Scotland’s 2017 student competition closes, but the prize is worth a few sleepless nights in order to get that entry in on time.

Up for grabs are three weeks of work experience at the Scottish Parliament and £500 in cash.

So what do you have to do to be in the running?

Make a three-minute-video or write an 800-word blog aimed at teenagers on how the rule of law, as upheld by the Scottish Parliament, impacts on people in Scotland.

Entries will be scrutinised by a panel made up of Law Society and Scottish Parliament representatives and also by members of the target audience: pupils in secondary education in Scotland.

It’s a bit like a legal X Factor, thankfully without the big hair, make-up and Spandex, but the competition will be just as tough and the prize a lot more rewarding.

Opening the door to the Scottish Parliament will provide the winner with unrivalled experience and contacts.

It will be a very big gold star on the winner’s CV and could put you in the front running when it comes to securing a top role right here on s1jobs.

Last year 549 trainees were recruited across Scotland and 90% are now working as solicitors.

It’s the bigger firms that are recruiting most actively, but the Law Society is encouraging smaller practices, too, to inject new ideas and enthusiasm into their offices by sharing a trainee with other firms.

Katie Wood, head of admissions at the Law Society of Scotland, says: “Our advice for employers on taking on a trainee provides a factual look at what’s involved in providing traineeships, along with an outline of opportunities and benefits.

“Trainee contributions are not only financial. Often they bring a range of new skills to the firms in which they are placed.

“Flexible traineeships, such as sharing a trainee with another firm or offering a part-time traineeship, are a good option for some firms.”
