Separation anxiety? Let’s get networking!

Six degrees of separation. This is the notion that all living things in the world are a maximum of just six steps away from each other.

Or as Davey would have explained it: “So my pal Jim went to school with Bob, whose Aunt Macey was once in a band with a guy called Snitchy, who used to date a punk girl called Agnes, whose sister is now married to Ryan Gosling. So that means I’m best friends with a Hollywood star.”

It’s not too far from the truth. Well, apart from the bit about Ryan Gosling.

So what can we do to harness the full power of such amazing interconnectivity?

Well, in the world of HR networking has always been that tangled web we weave to make working life easier and careers more rewarding.

This means the idea of interconnectivity is already built into the very concept of human resources . . . but there are some easy ways to maximise the benefits of new or existing connections.

Now look at it this way

Networking helps us to enrich every aspect of our professional – and, yes, most probably our personal – lives. This is because a good networker builds relationships with a wide variety of different people in order to benefit from many different perspectives on the world of HR.

There are no time limits

We should never think that just because we haven’t spoken to or emailed a contact for a long time, that relationship is no longer of any value. Networking is about opening doors – and once open we should routinely take a step through and see where they lead, not just today but at any time in the future. The best HR networker always keeps an open mind about who they’re talking to and when.

Make yourself comfortable

Not everyone relishes the prospect of meeting complete strangers at conferences or picking up the telephone to start a cold call conversation. That’s why it’s important to choose a method of communicating that makes us feel comfortable. For some that might be a face-to-face informal get-together over coffee. For others, it might be an introductory email followed up by a phone call. Just like our personal relationships, business connections should develop naturally and easily.
