One of the best things about the property industry is it attracts people from a wide range of backgrounds and experience.

Whether you aim to be a surveyor or a property manager, a commercial lawyer or a sales agent, for those looking for an entry-level job the biggest challenge can be the application form.

At the interview you’ll have time to shine but the application form is a very restricted format.

Follow these top tips, however, and you’ll be donning your interview suit in no time.

Experience shows

A big challenge is convincing your employer why you want to work in this sector when your CV shows you’ve never worked in it before.

This is where experience elsewhere comes in.

Even if your work was voluntary or part-time and in a different sector, highlight the skills you gained, such as communication and customer service, to show why this new role is also suited to you.

Think for yourself

When completing an application, beware those open-ended questions such as ‘Why do you want to work in property?’

It’s easy to cut and paste an off-the-shelf answer but these questions separate the wheat from the chaff.

Be specific to the company and the role.

No empty spaces

It goes without saying you’ll have read every page of the company’s website to see which areas of property they specialise in.

You should also be scanning s1homes so you know what’s what in the current market.

Now you can use this knowledge to fill in the final box that asks for any other information. This is the space to show off to your new employer.

Double-check everything

Before you send that form, check through every answer for typos and bad grammar. View your application as the first piece of work you’re carrying out for the company. You want to make it perfect in every way to demonstrate your attention to detail and top-of-the-class communication skills. A fresh pair of eyes can help, so rope in a pal to help.

And finally . . .

Make sure you keep a copy of your application form so that when you’re called for interview – and why wouldn’t you be? – you can read it over again and remind yourself of everything you wrote.
