Construction in Scotland
The construction industry in Scotland is large and diverse, with employers ranging from small family businesses to worldwide property development companies. The industry as a whole employs over 6% of the Scottish workforce. Construction workers are required throughout the whole country to work on projects ranging from private housing to commercial construction and infrastructure projects (roads, railways and airports).
The industry employs people in unskilled, skilled and professional roles. 25% of jobs are in skilled trades such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring and installation or decorating, while a further 25% operate in a professional capacity, including architects, surveyors and engineers. The building and construction sector also employs large numbers of semi-skilled and unskilled workers.
Women in Construction
The industry is traditionally male dominated, with only 10% of the workforce being female. However, several schemes and initiatives have been created to encourage women to work in construction. These identify training requirements as well as providing business support to females working in the building industry. For further information visit The National Association of Women in Construction.
