Developer / Senior Developer Glasgow   £22,000 - £30,000 (depending on experience)

Based in Glasgow city centre, 55degrees is a dynamic, creative business delivering a broad spectrum of high quality film, design, web, software and interactive products. We have a large client base and focus on enabling organisations to tell their stories through a variety of media. As a result we are looking for a number of ambitious, creative and determined people to join our fast expanding team.

We’re looking for Rails developers to work in our Glasgow office on a full-time permanent basis, working on a variety of small, medium and large projects. Some of the work would be within a larger team, taking direction from the Technical Director, graphic design team and clients, other projects would involve working solo. So we’re looking for a “self-starting team-player”

We are using a very wide range of technologies to implement complex software projects which go well beyond simple websites, and which include elements of enterprise infrastructure.  We’re looking for passion and enthusiasm. Lots of commercial Rails experience would be very nice, but the main thing is that you’re as enthusiastic as we are.

As a developer / senior developer you would be responsible for delivering websites and web-based applications and associated infrastructure to the clients’ specifications, and work with the client to ensure that the software being produced meets their requirements. You will be responsible for ensuring that their deliverables are fully tested, and would be ready and able to maintain and support the software.  You would need to be analytical – and apply analytical and creative thinking styles to complex information in order to make effective judgement about business issues.

Required Skills

• Required Languages and Technologies – Ruby on Rails, RSpec, Cucumber, Javascript
• Nice-to-have Languages and Technologies – Git, HAML, SASS, JQuery, Cocoa. Java, J2EE, Sys Admin, Deployment, enterprise software (messaging systems, scheduling etc.). Experience with Google Apps and APIs would be great.
• Testing – Develop and test components, drivers and stubs using standard frameworks
• Implementation – can demonstrate a clear understanding of Ruby and Rails syntax and usage
• UI – Able to implement visual designs using HTML/HAML, Javascript and CSS/SASS
• Databases – Understands entity relationship modelling and basic SQL
• Business Domain Knowledge – Demonstrates understanding of the key business terminology in respect to their own project.

In general, 55degrees hire web developers who hold a bachelors degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline. Graduates from other fields with relevant commercial experience would also be considered. We would expect a candidate to have successfully delivered a number of commercial web projects and be able to demonstrate working code from a public repository, such as GitHub.
