Service Area: Operational Services Salary £19,690 - £22,205 Per Annum + 7.5% shift allowance Ref: 292.06 Closing Date: 26 September 2010 A vacancy exists for a suitably qualified and experienced approved electrician to work with the Roads Lighting section.
The successful candidates will be required to carry out lighting installation, routine maintenance, repairs and fault finding on a range of public electrical furniture. The candidate will also participate in the Council’s out of hours emergency service if and when requested.
The work is mostly out of doors and involves working at heights. A knowledge of the current wiring regulations is essential and knowledge of safety procedures and mapping systems would be beneficial but full training will be given. A current driving licence is required.
The Candidate would require to work a shift pattern which includes alternate Saturdays for which a 7.5% shift allowance is payable.
Interviews will be held on Tuesday 12th October 2010.
Requirements
JOB SCOPE
The Lighting Section administers over 60,000 Lighting Units, Traffic Signs, Street Nameplates, Traffic Lights and Control Boxes by means of computerised management systems. The postholder has some degree of responsibility for installation, repair, routine maintenance, records and customer interface.
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To assist in the process of Street Lighting, Traffic Lights and Traffic Sign works. To carry out lighting maintenance, testing and installation, traffic light maintenance, sign maintenance, testing and installation and any other electrical work associated with the Council.

Responsibilities
MAJOR TASKS – JOB ACTIVITIES
- Repairs to street lighting units and control cabinets.
- Investigation, testing and repair of the street lighting cable network.
- Repairs to sign and bollard lighting units.
- Routine inspection and testing of all the Council’s unmetered supplies.
- Preparing reports and processing energy returns for inventory updates.
- Investigation and testing of supplies for traffic signals
- Respond to general complaints from public.
- Attend as an emergency and make safe any unsafe electrical equipment owned by theCouncil.
- Prepare fault reports for onward transmission to the Regional Electricity Company.
- Install, test and maintain the Council’s festive lighting displays.
- Install, test and maintain temporary supplies
- Install, test and maintain stair lighting for Housing.
- Install, test and maintain supplies for door entry systems and TV amplification systems
- Participate when required in the Council’s emergency standby system.
- Carry out any other electrical work associated with the operation of the section.
