Strathclyde Fire & Rescue (SFR) are now looking for expressions of interest for Retained Firefighter positions within the Retained Duty System at various locations within the Strathclyde Area. You must be available to respond to emergency calls from your home, or place of work (by employer agreement), at any time of the day or night within 6 minutes of emergency call-outs, however, if you do not meet these requirements your application may still be considered. To ensure you maintain the relevant knowledge and skills required for the role, you will be required to attend your station for a 3 hour session each week. In return you will be paid a retainer fee along with additional payments for every incident and training night you attend.

Although SFR may not have actual vacancies at all of our RDS stations, we operate an ongoing recruitment process and would encourage potential applicants to express their interest in joining us. Using the ‘myjobscotland’ portal you will be able to register your details and indicate to us which one of the RDS stations you would be interested in working at.

If we currently have a vacancy at that station, we will start to progress you through our standard recruitment process. However, if there are no vacancies at the Station where you wish to work, we will only progress you through the initial stages of our process (which are some on-line literacy, numeracy and judgement tests). If you meet the standard requirement for these tests*, we will, with your permission, hold your details on file until a vacancy does become available. At that time, we will contact you again and if your availability meets the requirements of the vacant post, put you through the remainder of the recruitment process. Please note that if you are interested in working at a Station where a vacancy does not arise for several months, this would mean that we are putting you on hold for a considerable period of time so it is important that you fully understand that we are waiting on a vacancy arising before we can progress your application further. *The currency of our psychometric tests last for 12 months, so if you are on hold for longer than this then we will ask you to re-sit the tests when a vacancy arises.Detailed information on being an RDS Firefighter can be found in the information pack attached to this advert.

Firefighters in the Retained Duty System (RDS) are individuals who live or work close to specific Community Fire Stations and can commit to providing an emergency response service for that station.

Most of them are women and men whose primary employment is in another field, but in addition to that, they provide the same range of emergency service as their full time Firefighter colleagues in some of Strathclyde's smaller towns and rural villages.

As a Firefighter (RDS) your role would be challenging and demanding. There are stressful and hazardous situations to be faced and you will be required to deal with these while providing comfort and reassurance to members of the community. You may be involved in Community Fire Safety Initiatives within your local area to help prevent emergencies occurring.

As the Board is generally the secondary employer for RDS employees we will be aware of when RDS employees are undertaking work on behalf of the Board and would ensure relevant rest periods during this time. However, we do not have the same level of knowledge when RDS employees are working with their primary employers, nor is it practical to communicate with so many other organisations on an ongoing basis. It is therefore your responsibility to ensure that you have had sufficient rest breaks from your primary employment prior to reporting for duty with Strathclyde Fire & Rescue. If you have not had sufficient rest breaks, you must amend your availability to respond to incidents accordingly.

To become an RDS Firefighter, you must:

• Be 18 years of age or over
• Be Physically fit and in good health
• Have good vision and colour perception
• Be seriously interested in helping to provide an invaluable emergency service for your local community
• Have the express permission of your primary employer to become an RDS Firefighter

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue is an Equal Opportunities employer and encourages applications from all sectors of the community. In addition, we are committed to the Double Tick Initiative and offer a guaranteed interview to any applicant who considers him / herself to be disabled subject to them meeting the minimum requirements for the post which includes the ability to successfully pass online testing and practical selection tests at various stages of the recruitment process.
