James Fisher Defence (JFD), based in Renfrew, provides a range of specialist, underwater operating and engineering services in the defence sector worldwide and is looking to recruit a Mechanical Design Engineer to support its growing business.
In an exciting environment, and as part of a small team, your role will allow you to contribute significantly to the delivery of state-of-the-art technical products. Working for James Fisher Defence, a world leader in the defence, marine services and subsea industries, you will produce innovative and robust assemblies to exacting specifications and time-scales.
Roles and Responsibilities
As part of the Engineering Team you will:
- Produce and develop concepts, specifications and engineering solutions to exciting mechanical problems
- Design and develop complete assemblies and systems from start to finish
- Test or witness your own designs
- Interact with users and customers
- Assign tasks to engineers/managers/contractors
- Collate / produce progress & project reports and aid in decision making based upon their results
- Ensure that project related records are complete, accurate and up-to-date
- Produce studies and technical assessments
In addition on occasions you will:
- Travel to client/customer and manage/communicate/present project specifics sometimes overseas
- Working in the workshop or with the Operations team off shore
Essential Attributes
- Be comfortable working independently on complex and varied problems
- Have a sound knowledge of engineering principles + strong mechanical engineering skills
- Happy with working in a small team and the additional responsibilities that entails
- At ease dealing directly with customers and contractors
- Comfortable with maintaining and controlling project documentation, costs and procedures
- Focused on delivering to tight deadlines and specifications
- Capable of reacting to changes + willing to go the extra mile to deliver quality products
- Minimum 3yrs experience in an appropriate engineering field
- Effectively identify and communicate critical tasks and key risks
- Experience in modelling and drafting on AutoDesk Inventor, Solidworks or similar
- An engineering degree or time served background
Desirable Attributes
- Be familiar with working to marine, defence standards and Lloyds Rules
- Subsea/offshore/defence background
- Experience in design integration of mechanical systems
- Working knowledge of , AutoCAD, MathCAD or similar
- Previous experience of commercially sensitive projects + the security aspects this entails
- Be willing to travel + have a passport
- Full clean driving licence
