Who we are

We work with around 200 government, healthcare and local authority organisations’, making sure £31 billion of taxpayers’ money is spent wisely. So we play a key role in ensuring the people of Scotland enjoy high-quality public services, and through our audit and public reporting programmes, we deliver robust, authoritative reports which support the improvement and governance of public services and the work of the Scottish Parliament.

The public sector is facing tough times, with budgets being cut and the demand for services ever increasing.  Audit Scotland’s role is to make sure organisation’s that spend public money in Scotland use it properly, efficiently and effectively.  So it’s no surprise that working for Scotland’s spending watchdog is particularly challenging. But equally, it’s extremely rewarding.

Professional Qualification Scheme

We have a number of great opportunities for talented people to join our professional qualification scheme.  You’ll receive full sponsorship towards becoming a Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS).  Our scheme is designed to give you the best chance of qualifying as well as a great foundation for your career.  It’s a path not just to qualification but a real gateway to senior management.

When you start studying towards your accountancy qualification, you will be given support every step of the way with study leave, as well as financial help for travel and other study expenses and trainee networking opportunities.  In all, we bring together a healthy mix of study, real work and interesting people, to give you the chance to achieve your ambitions with us.

On the Job Experience

You’ll work mainly at client locations across Scotland and occasionally away from home.  Generally speaking you will be placed according to the needs of the business at the time, as well as your individual development requirements. Wherever you’re based, you can be sure of high profile and challenging work that will stand out as making a difference to our organisation – and our clients.

From day one you'll be out on site, meeting people and gathering information. You'll interview client staff to gain an understanding of their systems, carrying out analysis, audit accounts and reporting your findings. And by working alongside experienced auditors, you'll gain valuable skills in auditing some of Scotland's councils, health boards and government departments.  Whatever you do, you’ll enjoy the broadest possible variety of work. It’ll be challenging. But we’ll be right behind you and we’re confident you’ll find it both rewarding and career-enhancing.

We take graduates from any discipline. What matters is not so much the subject you have studied – it is more about whether you can demonstrate the analytical skills combined with the ability to work with others and to present and influence with impact.
