Location: Edinburgh Zoo
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland – the charity that owns both RZSS Edinburgh Zoo and RZSS Highland Wildlife Park – are looking for committed, compassionate and conservation-minded individuals to join our expert staff team.
RZSS aims to connect people with nature and safeguard species from extinction, a mission that sees us work both here in Scotland and in over 20 countries around the world. From inspiring the next generation about wildlife in our parks to protecting chimpanzees in the Ugandan rainforest; looking after some of the world’s most endangered species to saving the Scottish wildcat, RZSS is making a huge difference and we need your help to continue to grow. Volunteers play a key role in helping us to fulfil our mission and we seek an inspiring individual to manage, develop and motivate this team, while also expanding our volunteering opportunities and resources.
As part of the Property and Estates team you will be expected to work within our parks and enclosures under the guidance of the head of Property and Estates. As a Blacksmith for the society, you will enhance your welding and fabrication skills by working on a variety of projects including new build and the general maintenance of the site and uniquely within animal enclosures. Previous high profile projects that we have completed in house include the Tiger Enclosure and Pelican walkthrough. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to be able to renew fence lines and repairing metal slides or animal transportation crates. You will be expected to work on your own or within a team situation demonstrating and setting a good example of health and safety practice.
Who we are looking for
You will be a positive team player with a proven ability of working in a team situation and on your own. The successful completion of a Blacksmith/metal fabricator apprenticeship is essential. You will be able to demonstrate the ability to work to a high degree of accuracy leaving a first class finish and that you can complete projects with a more artistic flair. You will have experience of leading a small team through a project and have the ability to pass on your skills and experience to apprentices. An understanding of working in a multi trade environment coupled with the ability for practical application of your site health and safety knowledge is required, and training in use of all blacksmith/fabricator machinery are essential. A full UK driving license is desirable.
This is a full time position working 37.5 hours per week.
