£42,600 (including Distant Islands Allowance)

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic teacher who is ready for the challenge of taking on a PT role and being part of the wider leadership team in the school. You will be fully committed to inspiring and motivating all pupils and to excellence in learning and teaching. A commitment to collegiate working, to school improvement and self-evaluation and to maximising opportunities for all pupils is essential. This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate especially as this post includes responsibility for leading and managing an area of whole school responsibility. Currently the responsibility for Science in S1 and S2 is shared with the other Principal Teachers in the department and a shared and collegiate approach is taken. This post is also an opportunity to be part of a forward looking school, and a rich and vibrant community.

Stromness Academy is a six year secondary school in Orkney with a catchment area covering the town of Stromness and the West Mainland. The current school roll is 353 pupils. The school is on a well appointed campus situated in Stromness. The school serves a dispersed population and over two thirds of the pupils are bussed into school. We are committed to providing a safe, caring and inclusive environment where all our pupils achieve. We are currently working together to create a new and shared vision for the school as we move forward. We have strong and rich partnerships with the community and are always seeking to build on our existing partnerships within the local community and further afield.

Further information about the school can be found on the internet at: www.stromnessacademy.org.uk

To discuss the post you are invited to contact: James Wylie, Service Improvement Officer, tel: 01856 873535 or email james.wylie@orkney.gov.uk.

This post is subject to membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme in respect of regulated work with children.

Salary will be based on Point 2 of the Principal Teachers Spine of the SNCT Salary Tables plus a Distant Islands Allowance.

You must be registered, or in the process of registering, with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

It is anticipated that interviews will be held on 14 October 2016.

Closing Date: Thursday 6 October 2016

Please note that interview and resettlement expenses will be paid for this post.

About Orkney Islands Council

Forget images of remote islands - Orkney is well served by superb modern transport links.

Forget the idea of a few people in the middle of no-where - Orkney is home to over 20,000 people.

Orkney may bring to mind certain images, but the chances are they are, to say the least, a little off the mark. Sure, we're a bit off the beaten track, but the needs of our community are just the same as anywhere else. And, as a result, the opportunities we can offer you are comparable with those you'll find elsewhere. Of course, there are a few differences: for starters Orkney consists of 100,000 hectares spread over 70+ small islands (19 of which are inhabited), so, like our service users, you'll need to make the most of the transportation links which are vital to Orkney's social and economic well-being.

Orkney Islands Council may be the smallest local authority in Scotland, but we can offer some big challenges. And big opportunities. This could be your big chance to make the move, and make a difference.

OIC has an impact on many aspects of everyday life. With around 1,800 staff, we are also the countyâ€â„¢s biggest employer.
