Vacancy posted: Tuesday, 11 October 2016

Salary: 26,895 - 35,763
Location: Dumfries

Closing date: 25 October 2016
Job ref. no.: DGA01644

Teacher Additional Support for Learning 0.2FTE(7/11077)
Base: Newton Stewart or Kirkcudbright
Unpromoted Teacher Scale: £26,895 - £35,763

Dumfries and Galloway is home to several children and young people, for whom English is not the first or home language. They come from a variety of backgrounds and are at different stages of language development, both in their first language and English.

We describe these pupils as using English as an additional language, recognising that they are bi-lingual, possibly experiencing different cultures at home and at school.

Pupils are at all levels of proficiency, from children starting nursery and new arrivals in the early stages of English, to pupils in S5/6 planning to go to university. Each child is an individual and while some experience little difficulty, others risk being disadvantaged, if the language of the school is allowed to become a barrier to learning.

Applicants for teaching posts must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland, Clerwood House, 96 Clermiston Road, Edinburgh, EH12 6UT in the appropriate sector.

This post is considered as Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. From 28 February 2011, preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to formal offer of employment being made by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Applicants who have been resident outside the UK within the last 5 years, if offered a position, in addition to a Disclosure Scotland Check, will be required to provide a completed police record check from the police authority in the country or countries in which they were resident.

The aims of this service are:
• To support the learning and teaching of pupils with a first language other than English, in the Authority's schools, so that they reach their full potential
• To improve access, ensure inclusion and raise achievement across the mainstream curriculum
• To aid the process of assessment
• To work in partnership with the EAL learner's own school and teachers
• To boost the self-esteem of pupils for whom English is an additional language
• To promote equality of opportunity
