Spring School Support Assistant

Edinburgh Zoo’s successful spring school programme for 5 to 15 year olds will continue in 2016 and we are now recruiting one support staff to provide pastoral support for children and practical support for teachers as the team delivers exciting activities based upon based upon an Africa theme.
Spring School will run the weeks commencing the 3rd and 10th of April 2017. Children will attend a week-long course of animal related activities from 9am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday. Activities include arts and crafts, animal encounters, games, zoo trails, drama, keeper encounters, music and much more! The weekly programme will be repeated for two weeks, with different children attending each week. Each week concludes with a performance by the children for their parents, to show-case what they have done and learnt during the week.
The children in attendance will be separated into classes of 26 by school year range. The classes are: Primary 2/3, Primary 4/5, Primary 6/7 and Secondary 1-4.

Successful candidates will be responsible for: supervising children during staggered breaks and lunchtimes and organising informal games for these sessions; taking care of children who feel sick/vulnerable and are therefore temporarily unable to take part in class activities; providing one-on-one support for children with additional support needs; helping to create and distribute resources; running pre-planned drop-off and wind-down sessions with all age groups; and any other tasks reasonably required.
There will be a mandatory induction and training day on Saturday 6 November 2016.
Support staff will be paid for the two weeks of the programme, as well as an additional day for induction. Exact working hours are as follows:
Saturday induction: 9am – 5pm; 6.5hrs per day (8hrs minus 60min lunch + 2 x 15min break unpaid)
Monday – Thursday: 8.30am – 3.45pm; 6.25hrs per day (7.25hrs minus 45min lunch +15min break unpaid)
Friday: 8.30am - 4.00pm; 6.5hrs per day (7.5hrs minus 45min lunch +15min break unpaid)
Over two weeks (two weeks plus equivalent of one day for preparation) = 69.6 hours
