We are looking for a volunteer befriender for J, a resident at Quarriers Ashgrove Service.

Ashgrove House is a two storey Victorian building set in the heart of Quarriers Village. Ashgrove House is a residential care home supporting six people with learning disabilities, epilepsy and behaviours that maybe challenging at times, when staff are offering support.

J has lived in Quarriers for a long time, most of his adult life. J has well controlled epilepsy and enjoys talking with people, going for a pint, listening to music and putting on the odd bet every now and again.

The volunteer role is to support J to attend local football matches in Greenock (Morton) and any day horse racing events (Ayr) when J and volunteer feel ready for these activities. The volunteer would offer one-to-one support, to engage and chat about Greenock as this is his home town. We would be looking for the volunteer to build a relationship and share information about local area.

Skills and experience required are;

  • Local knowledge of the Inverclyde area especially Greenock , Cathcart Square etc.
  • Patience as this gentleman  can be very repetitive in his everyday  conversation
  • Interest of 60’s ,country and Scottish music
  • Interest in football – Morton , Celtic
  • Driver

This opportunity will take place at Ashgrove project  in Quarriers Village to start with and them mainly Inverclyde area. Commitment required would be two to three hours per week if possible.

Training and support offered to the volunteer:

  • Epilepsy and rescue medication
  • Medication
  • Equality and Diversity
  • Core documents – Ashgrove staff will go through documents with volunteer
  • Named staff member to provide support

Selection process will be volunteer applicaion form, informal meeting with project staff, reference and PVG checks.

Please note:  The age range for this volunteer role is 45-60 years of age.  A male is preferred for this role.
