Java Developer

The Open Digital Services Centre was established in early 2014 and is expected to lead to the creation of around 250 new jobs. This new facility is a centre of excellence and delivers digital development services to CGI's clients across the European public and commercial sectors. Due to our success we are expanding with opportunities in both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Increasingly we're taking our development skills to our customers and working closely with them on-site. CGI is now actively recruiting for these high-profile development opportunities.

Role and Responsibility

Open digital engineers will undertake development activities in Agile and classical practices. You will be responsible for coding, building, testing and maintenance of software systems, and coaching junior level developers. You will contribute to ODSC strategic development by maintaining competence in open technologies and bringing in innovative and pragmatic solutions to both business and technical challenges.

Initially the role will be focused on a full-time assignment in a client site in Edinburgh.

Essential Skills /Experience

* Java development

* JavaEE or Spring experience

* SOA/microservices

* Test driven development and continuous integration

* Linux environments Desirable Skills /Experience

* Enterprise middleware and frameworks - e.g. workflow, integration, messaging, business rules etc.

* Development using Open Source technologies such as MongoDB, Neo4J, Hadoop, PostgreSQL, Pentaho, Jasper, Talend, ELK, Lumify, Drools, Jbpm, Camel, ActiveMQ, Python

* JBoss solutions and products


* Big Data analytics and infrastructure

* Code performance profiling

* Cloud container environments

* Experience of agile development, ideally SCRUM

* Participation in an Open Source community project

* Knowledge of Spring framework
The right individual will have to have the following soft skills

- Pro-Active self-starter

- Excellent communication skills

- A structured approach to problem diagnosis and resolution

Occasional travel to other parts of the UK may be required.

CGI is looking for new members to join a programme working with the Scottish Government on the Agriculture Food and Rural Communities (AFRC) - Futures Programme. Initially you will join this this fast paced and client facing delivery programme, working from the Scottish Government's offices in Edinburgh. The aim of the programme is to deliver an IT solution that will facilitate the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) programme that provides financial support to farmers, crofters and rural businesses. As we reach the end of the third year of the engagement it is an exciting time to join both CGI and the programme. With strengthened client relations and an established team in place, you will be joining a CGI and Scottish Government team that is working together on a significant capital programme for Scotland
