The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow possesses a large internationally rated Engineering Faculty with a proud history of successful joint ventures with industrial and enterprise partners. As part of the University’s strategic development the Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) has been established near Glasgow’s International Airport. The AFRC is the embodiment of a £30 million collaborative investment by Industrial, Academic and Government partners seeking to establish a world-leading research facility for forging and forming technologies.

To support this world-leading research, our IT system is central to support these projects. As such, an exciting opportunity to be part of a successful team has arisen. Taking the lead in developing the centre’s IT operational systems to help assist project teams deliver their research, the IT systems manager will also implement security systems to align with the IT strategy and have the centre achieve cyber essentials plus and accreditation to ISO 27001.

The post holder will manage and maintain the existing AFRC IT operational systems and infrastructure, while also supporting and project managing the implementation of new systems to enhance the long term goals of the AFRC. The primary project of the IT team will be to lead and implement systems to help AFRC achieve Cyber Essentials Plus which will lead in to the centre’s project to achieve accreditation to ISO 27001. The post holder is required to work collaboratively with the department computing team and University Information Services. The specific requirement and mode of operation of the AFRC will require the post holder a high degree of autonomy and responsibility to design and maintain complex IT services, from advanced modelling application, shop floor executions and data gathering as well as more conventional desktop capability. The post holder will also be supporting and leading where required, the centre’s future development into digital manufacturing and virtual reality systems. The post-holder will ensure that all systems comply with the necessary regulatory frameworks and standards, whilst providing necessary support and training for all staff activates – including the development of IT policies and procedures for the IT systems. The post holder is also required to represent the AFRC internally and externally on University and High Value Manufacturing Catapult forums and projects.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of Degree level in a relevant subject, with substantial Information Technology experience, with an established track record within a relevant academic or industrial environment. You will have experience providing specialist/professional IT advice to a range of stakeholders in addition to experience in developing and improving systems and managing budgets. In addition, you will have excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills, with demonstrable ability to train and mentor the IT team.
