College lecturers typically work with young adults in further education (FE) establishments. Students are usually over 16 years old, but occasionally courses are offered to 14 - 16 year olds who are studying for work-related qualifications.
A good college lecturer needs to enjoy spending time with young people, and be a good communicator. You will also need plenty of patience, and the ability to form good working relationships with students, parents and colleagues.
To become a further education lecturer you must have at least a level 3 SVQ qualification in your chosen subject, and a recognised teaching qualification, depending on what subject you wish to teach and whether you want to specialise further, such as teaching students with learning difficulties.
The main advantage with a college lecturer position over a school teaching post, is that your students have chosen to study the subject you teach, so you can be confident that they share your passion for the field.
