Logistics and Distribution Industry in Scotland

Scotland's widely spread population relies on the logistics industry to co-ordinate and deliver goods and produce essential to day-to-day life and to provide transportation across the country. The sector employs over 3% of the Scottish workforce. There are also a significant number of self-employed haulage contractors.

Jobs are extremely varied across the sector and roles include warehouse staff, lorry drivers, logistics managers and planning roles. The sector has been transformed over recent decades and, while it still employs large numbers of manual and operative staff, it is now one of the most technology-dependant areas of business, requiring many highly specialised skills. This in turn is allowing the industry to offer more structured careers.
