Manufacturing Industry in Scotland

The manufacturing and production industry employs around 10% of the Scottish workforce and exports goods worth £12 billion.

Historically, the manufacturing sector was highly labour intensive and large scale involving huge factories, shipyards and steel plants. That type of manufacturing has largely been replaced by the manufacture of smaller and less labour intensive produce. The indigenous food and drink sector is expected to grow considerably over the coming years, party due to continued growth in demand for Scotch whisky. Other key manufacturing sectors are textiles and electronics.

The range of jobs on offer reflects the sector’s diversity. Many skilled roles will be specific to product groups but as production lines have become increasingly automated so has the need for multi-skilled employees and more sophisticated management techniques.
