Banking giant Morgan Stanley has said it will create 600 jobs in Glasgow. The jobs will be phased in over the next three years and will take the US-based finance firm's workforce in the city to 1370.
Scotland is now the company's biggest financial centre in Europe outside London. Morgan Stanley also has 230 staff in Cumbernauld.
Half of the jobs being created will form a new IT facility, with the other 300 divided between existing services. All will be at the company's Douglas Street headquarters.
A Regional Selective Assistance grant of £6million will support the company's plans to grow its finance, operations and technology support functions already in Glasgow. Jobs on offer will include managers and analysts.
The news was announced during a visit by First Minister Alex Salmond to the bank's headquarters in the new Cerium Building.
Mr Salmond said: "Morgan Stanley's commitment and investment in Glasgow demonstrates exactly what the Scottish economy can achieve.
"It shows Scotland has a highly skilled workforce and we are capable of attracting investment from multinational companies worldwide.
"This decision is excellent news not just for Glasgow, but for the Scottish economy."
City council leader Steven Purcell said: "Financial services have helped transform Glasgow's economy and have been the foundation of our recent prosperity.
"Today's announcement is a major boost to the city and for the people who will gain from these jobs.."
A report last month said Glasgow was one of the 10 most attractive locations in Europe for banks and financial houses. It came ninth - seven places above Edinburgh - after leasing almost 1million square metres of office space last year.
Other big names in Glasgow's financial district include the Weir Group, ScottishPower, Esure, Barclays and JP Morgan. |
