Allied Vehicles has high hopes of expanding its 300-strong workforce at Possil in Glasgow producing zero-emission vehicles.
It has already ordered at least 1000 battery packs from Dundee-based Axeon Holdings, Europe's largest independent lithium-ion battery-system supplier.
Allied specialises in adapting vehicles produced by a range of manufacturers, including Peugeot, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Ford and Fiat, into wheelchair-accessible taxis, Motability cars, and minibuses for community transport associations and local authorities.
Outlining Allied's plans to produce a range of eco-friendly vehicles, including delivery vans, Allied marketing manager Donald Pow said: "Our specialism is where there needs to be some adaptation, which is very much about accessibility (at the moment) .
"This is really taking it to a different area, which is taking a production vehicle and adapting it to be electrically-powered rather than combustion-powered."
Allied has a total workforce of about 360, with sales staff based around the UK in addition to its employees at its Possil factory. The company has so far declined to put an exact figure on the number of jobs that will be created.
