Alhstrom praised for creating Borders jobs

A new production line at a Finnish-owned paper plant in the Borders was praised yesterday by First Minister Alex Salmond for the direct benefit it would bring to families in the region.
The £23m production line at the Ahlstrom factory in Chirnside is creating 30 jobs and safeguarding 180 more, on a site which puts £10m a year into the local economy, Mr Salmond added.
Speciality paper, such as that used for teabags and industrial wipes, is produced at the plant.
Mr Salmond said "vast" global opportunities have now opened up for the firm, through the use of its groundbreaking technology.
"Ahlstrom is clearly committed to the Borders and today's announcement has a direct impact on families and high streets across the region," he said.
"Despite the current economic difficulties, the company has expanded its site, developed and installed new technology and is increasing its workforce by 30, with further job creation expected."
Meanwhile, a new production line at a Coca-Cola plant in East Kilbride was opened yesterday by Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead.
The new line will increase production by 8000 bottles an hour.
The plant will also stop sending waste to landfill sites by the end of 2011 - described by Mr Lochhead as an example of "real leadership" to eradicate waste.
