New Sainsburys store opens in Strathaven with 140 jobs

More than 100 jobs have been created in South Lanarkshire by supermarket chain Sainsbury’s.
The new Strathaven store, which opened its doors today, had 140 jobs, all of which were given to local people.
Strathaven was the first town in Scotland to be awarded the Fairtrade mark and is now one of Scotland’s biggest Fairtrade supporters.
Chairman of the Strathaven Fairtrade Group, Margaret Morton, was invited to cut the ribbon in celebration of the new store that has provided the town with jobs and easily available Fairtrade produce.
Ms Morton said: “Shoppers should have the right to ethically sourced products at affordable prices.
“Clearly the people of Strathaven want to know producers are treated with respect and receive a fair wage for their products.
“To have a supermarket that believes in Fairtrade the way Sainsbury’s does is a great thing for Strathaven and I’m looking forward to trying the range of Fairtrade products in store”.
Store manager James Farquharson said: “The new Sainsbury’s is not just about offering customers a great range of products, it’s also about getting stuck in to community life and supporting local organisations.
“We’ve started things with the Strathaven Fairtrade Group and plan to work with them to raise awareness of the importance of Fairtrade. We’re all very proud to be opening in Strathaven.”
