Stena Line £200m port move set to create hundreds of jobs in Stranraer

Stena Line's Irish Sea ferry operations are to be switched from Stranraer to nearby Cairnryan, a move that will give passengers a quicker crossing to and from Belfast.

Alex Salmond said, Stena Line's Irish Sea ferry operations would move to the new £200m Loch Ryan port, safeguarding 500 jobs and delivering significant investment to Dumfries and Galloway.  It is due to open in autumn 2011.

He said "This is a significant day for transport and investment in Scotland, and today's announcements highlight the Scottish Government's continued commitment to working with investors to support jobs and the economy and to keep Scotland moving."

The move will create about 900 jobs during the 20-month construction phase and contribute to the regeneration of 26 acres of Stranraer's waterfront.

Stena's intention to leave Stranraer was first signalled in February 2003, with its proposed relocation site further up Loch Ryan at Old House Point.
