The Oil and Gas Industry in Scotland

Oil was first discovered in UK waters in 1966 and since then the oil and gas industry has had a huge impact on the Scottish economy, with over 2,000 companies and 6% of the country's workforce involved in the energy sector. Scotland's expertise in sourcing oil and gas in deep waters is key to the valuable energy export business and the industry therefore attracts significant long term investment. Whilst many jobs are based offshore, the sector also offers a broad range of opportunities onshore.

Aberdeen is the country’s oil capital and home to major industry employers such as the Wood Group, BP Amoco, Shell, Halliburton, and Subsea. The industry is continuing to flourish as newer extraction techniques are developed. Current estimates suggest that more than 920 million tonnes or recoverable crude oil remain within UK North Sea reserves, along with 1,000 billion cubic meters of natural gas. What's more, many of the skills and techniques developed within Scotland's oil and gas industry are now being put to use in renewable energy projects.
