Meet the Expert: Sam McGuigan

Show all Retail jobs across Scotland

Sam McGuigan was 17 years old when she started her first job as a sales assistant in a Glasgow superstore. Three months later she was promoted to the customer service desk.

So, Sam, how did it all start?

A lot of my friends worked in retail and so I thought I’d give it a go when I left school. For them it was a holiday job or a way to work part-time and earn money before studying at college. But I really liked being part of the store from the first day and I wanted to prove to myself I could make it in retail.

What makes retail so appealing?

People. For me it’s about meeting lots of people and helping them. Having happy customers is what makes my job so satisfying.

Are there any downsides?

Well, the flip side of meeting people is you do come across, let’s say, grumpy customers. Retail work requires lots of social interaction and sometimes you have to be brave in stressful situations. But it gets easier over time, especially as you get to know so much about the products and how to solve complaints.

How did you fast track so quickly?

I think it must be because I love my job. I always showed an interest in how things were run and how I could help. I think having that motivation and giving a wee bit extra every day makes someone stand out to the store manager.

How do you help others in their retail career?

I try to help my staff, especially new sales assistants, to understand teamwork makes every day run more smoothly. If you can do your bit but also ensure you’re supporting your colleagues, you’re already on the road to promotion.

Any words of wisdom for retail job seekers?

Always show your enthusiasm. It doesn’t matter whether you’re stocking shelves or working on the tills, you’re not just selling goods, you’re selling the shop: you’re a brand ambassador. Plus it makes the job so much more enjoyable!
