Shopping like never before

In the world of retail it’s no longer a case of one size fits all.

Shoppers come in all varieties and retailers have woken up to the idea the more personal they make the shopping experience, the better it will be for people and for profits.

retail 1Want to combine shopping with a trip to the cinema? The new boutique movie theatre opening in Princes Square in Glasgow fits the bill.

Fancy stepping inside the world of your favourite author? A trip to the Hogwarts Common Rooms is possible in branches of Waterstones, who now provide an immersive experience for Harry Potter fans.

The worlds of shopping and entertainment are getting closer so, if you want to boost your retail career, any extra skills you can bring to the job will prove useful.

So when you’re applying for retail vacancies on s1jobs, don’t forget to include details of other things you’ve done.

This might be bar work, gap year experiences, time spent as a children’s entertainer in holiday kids’ clubs or anything else that involves mixing with the public in an up-front role.

And it’s not just your star qualities that could make you shine.

Kindness, compassion and an ability to meet the needs of others are becoming increasingly important as retailers adapt to becoming a better fit for all of their customers.

A branch of Sainsbury’s in Prestwick is one of the first supermarkets in the country to trial the idea of a ‘relaxed’ check-out lane, designed to make shopping a better experience for older people and those with conditions such as dementia.

Similar set-ups are appearing in supermarkets across the country and staff are being trained to identify people who might need a little extra help.

We brought you news earlier in the year of how St Enoch’s Shopping Centre in Glasgow had introduced a dedicated space for those with autism and may find the vibrant atmosphere of a popular shopping space to be a little overwhelming.

So while retail environments are getting more exciting, they’re also becoming receptive to the idea that loud music, bright colours and lots of people don’t suit everyone – and they’re looking for staff who can deliver good customer service and a little bit of razzle dazzle, while recognising those moments when a quieter, sympathetic approach works best.
