Supercharge your sales career

Start off the year as you mean to go on by smashing your sales targets. As resolutions go, it’s not a bad one. But how are you going to achieve it?

Secure existing customers

You’ve an established relationship and they’re already happy to do business with you, so before you start hunting down new leads why not persuade your existing customers to buy more?

Do they know what extra products and services you can provide this year? If not, why not? Extra sales catalogues or special offers can encourage them to spend, but the best way to let them know what you can do is by talking directly to them.

Promote recommendations

Word of mouth is the king and queen of advertising, so find ways of persuading your customers, friends and family to spread the message about your products or services.

This might include offering them a discount for every new customer they recruit.

Think of them as your personal team out in the field – and keep them energised and primed to promote you.

Throw a party

Mix it up by organising an event for new leads and customers you’ve been working with for years.

Keep the sales talk to a minimum and make it a fun and memorable occasion. And while you’re topping up the fizz and handing out the canapés, pin back your ears and listen to what your guests are telling you they want.

Work harder

Be like Will Smith in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness: “Just do more!”

His character smashed his sales targets by making more calls, pursuing more leads and always going the extra mile.

If his colleagues worked hard he worked harder, put in more hours and secured more business.

. . . and do less

Don’t let burnout spoil your chances of being a success. Hit the gym, climb a Munro, tinker with a classic car, take the kids to the park.

Whatever your chill-out time involves, make sure it’s something completely different that allows you to switch off from selling.

This way, when you get back to work your brain will have had a break and you’ll be ready to climb up those sales tables again.
