'Exponential growth' as s1jobs thrives with technical innovation

From a tongue-in-cheek TV advert about chewing pennies to artificial intelligence matching candidates with employers in seconds, s1jobs has evolved alongside Scotland’s recruitment market for 25 years. As the Glasgow-founded recruitment platform marks its anniversary this weekend, its leaders say constant innovation has been key to surviving – and thriving – in a fast-moving digital industry where many online rivals have disappeared.

Owned by The Herald’s parent company, Newsquest Media Group, s1jobs launched in Glasgow in 2001 and has become known through the years for its humorous marketing campaigns such as the award-winning “Penny Chew” television ad of 2003 and the “Lavvy Heid/Gives You the Horn” campaign. But David Ward, managing director at Newsquest Scotland, says the key to the organisation marking its 25th anniversary on Saturday is technological innovation.

“Reaching 25 years is significant in this industry because very few digital-only businesses last that long,” Mr Ward said. “More often they’re either snapped up by a bigger tech company or lose relevance as the market shifts. We believe we’re as relevant to candidates and clients now as we’ve ever been, and that’s down to innovation. We constantly ask how we can make life easier for jobseekers and deliver the best candidates to employers, and the site continues to evolve around those questions.”

Developments such as AI-driven CV matching, verified profiles and one-tap apply have created a faster and more effective hiring process for both employers and jobseekers. Mr Ward said this combined with the scale of Newsquest’s audience creates a powerful offering.

“As well as anything we can deliver from a product perspective within the recruitment channels, we’ve also got an opportunity to tell stories, to promote brands, to cement the opportunities for any corporate or recruitment consultancy and communicate with the decision-makers across Scotland, or indeed in some instances the jobseekers as to why any given organisation or roles within an organisation might be of interest to them,” he explained.

A recent partnership signed with LinkedIn has allowed s1jobs to harness the power of the professional networking platform to promote job ads to its audience. This has increased both the volume and quality of applications.

“It’s had an exponential growth in applications and importantly, some of the data-sharing has allowed us to improve communication with clients,” Mr Ward said.

“It might be as simple as X percent of candidates have left one organisation to move to another organisation, and we would help arm that client with information about their retention rates and why they are poor. Is it the benefits associated with the role, is it the expectations of the role, is it the salary of the role – what are the reasons why an individual is leaving one organisation to move to another? We can help arm them with that information.”

Mr Ward said that from a jobseeker’s perspective the site has become much easier to use as candidates can generate an application and covering letter with the click of a button. This is opposed to the process in years gone by when candidates had to create each element themselves in a multiple-stage process.

There have been similar improvements for recruiters who are no longer bogged down by the demands of Boolean logic when searching through CV databases.

“We’ve taken all that hassle out for you,” Mr Ward said. “So you can quite literally cut and paste your job posting into the CV database and it will find you candidates based on role profile, or you can ask an AI tool that’s embedded to find you the relevant search strings for the type of position you are looking for.

“You just need to type in the position itself. So again it’s about simplicity, it’s about getting you to the right candidates quicker.”

Mr Ward added: “Reaching 25 years wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of our clients and the loyalty of jobseekers who return to us time and again.“We’re incredibly proud of the quality of service we provide, and of the professional, friendly approach that has been a constant throughout our history. That commitment to service remains at the heart of everything we do as we look to the future.”
