Full Job Description

Job purpose: Are you interested in construction, problem solving and working with numbers, but don't want to follow the traditional university route?

We're looking for a Graduate Apprentice Quantity Surveyor to join our team in Edinburgh while studying towards a degree through the Built Environment Graduate Apprenticeship programme.

This is a full-time employed position where you'll spend four days each week working alongside our team and one day at university, gaining practical experience whilst working towards a fully funded degree.

From your first day, you'll be involved in real projects rather than simply observing. You'll work alongside experienced Chartered Quantity Surveyors, attend site visits and client meetings, and gradually develop the knowledge and skills needed to become a professional Quantity Surveyor.

At Torridon, we specialise in refurbishment, retrofit and conversion projects across commercial and residential buildings. We are an independent Quantity Surveying practice, meaning our focus is entirely on helping clients understand costs, manage risk and make better decisions throughout their projects.

As a smaller business, you'll work closely with senior members of the team and gain responsibility earlier than you might in a larger organisation. You'll be supported throughout your apprenticeship, degree and, ultimately, your journey towards becoming a Chartered Quantity Surveyor.

What will I learn? Throughout your apprenticeship you'll gain experience across all aspects of Quantity Surveying, including:

  • Preparing construction cost estimates and cost plans
  • Measuring and pricing construction work
  • Understanding construction drawings and specifications
  • Tendering and procurement
  • Contract administration
  • Cost reporting and financial management
  • Attending site visits and project meetings
  • Working with architects, engineers, contractors and clients
  • Understanding how refurbishment and retrofit projects are planned and delivered
  • Using industry software and digital tools
  • Developing communication, presentation and problem-solving skills

Alongside your practical experience, you'll study towards your Built Environment degree, allowing you to apply what you're learning in the workplace straight away.

What qualifications or qualities are required? We're looking for someone who is curious, motivated and enjoys learning.

Ideally you'll have:

Essential

  • Eligibility to enrol on the Built Environment Graduate Apprenticeship programme
  • Highers (or equivalent qualifications) that meet the university entry requirements
  • Good numeracy and written communication skills
  • A genuine interest in construction and the built environment
  • The ability to work from our Edinburgh office four days per week
  • A willingness to learn and ask questions

We'd also like to see

  • An interest in maths, problem solving or design
  • Good organisational skills
  • Confidence communicating with other people
  • A positive attitude and willingness to take responsibility
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Previous construction experience isn't required. We'll provide the training and support you need to develop throughout your apprenticeship.
