Full Job Description
Overview Biomedical Engineers design, build and maintain medical devices, prosthetics, diagnostic equipment and bioinformatics tools. Day-to-day work consists of CAD modelling, finite element analysis, regulatory compliance (MDR), clinical trials support and cross-disciplinary collaboration with clinicians, biologists and software engineers. Typical Roles
- Design medical devices, prosthetics and diagnostic equipment
- Run regulatory compliance to MDR (Medical Device Regulation) standards
- Specialise in clinical engineering, medical device R&D, prosthetics or bioinformatics
- Work for firms such as Smith & Nephew, ResMed, NHS clinical engineering departments and major medical device companies Career Path Most UK biomedical engineers progress towards Chartered Engineer status (CEng) through IPEM or IMechE. Typical stages:
- Graduate Engineer (Years 0-2): build clinical and regulatory skills.
- Engineer (Years 2-4): run own design packages and complete IPEM/IMechE IPD.
- Chartered Biomedical Engineer (Years 4-8): pass CEng Review and lead complex projects.
