Full Job Description

A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join BEAR Scotlands SE Bridges team as a Bridge Inspector.

The South East Unit includes 870 bridges and structures including the iconic Queensferry Crossing and Forth Road Bridge, as well as other major bridges such as the Kincardine Bridge and Clackmannanshire Bridge.

Trunk roads in the South East serve as a vital link for Scotland's economy, ensuring thousands of daily journeys and deliveries are carried out safely.

The Bridge Inspector, reporting into the Inspection Manager, Assist in inspection, investigation, and supervision work on BEAR Scotland's NMC SE Contract's Major Bridges,

  • Assist in the planning and delivery of BEAR Scotland's NMC SE Major Bridges Inspection Programmes and help deliver Major Bridges Inspection Teams key performance indicators (KPI's).

  • Assist on other BEAR Scotland contracts as required which will involve other types of structures (Network Bridges, Culverts, Retaining Walls, Masts, Other).

  • Undertake a variety of inspections; General Inspections, Principal Inspections, Close & Visual Inspections, Safety Inspections, Access Inspections, Monitoring Inspections, and Special Inspections using relevant documentation (Inspection Manual for Highway Structures, CS450, Transport Scotland's Inspection Manual, O&M Manuals, Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, BEAR Scotland Procedures).

  • Assist in the inspection of more complex structures and components (Truss End Link Bearings, Lateral Thrust & Special Leaf Bearings, Half-Joints, Anchorages, Rocker Saddles, FRB Main Cables, QC Stay Cables, Swing Span, Other).

  • Assist in the inspection and reporting of various inspections and detailed investigations on a range of defects; Steel inspections and interpretation of steelwork defects.


  • Concrete inspections and interpretation of concrete defects.
  • Help arrange access, equipment, and resources for various inspection types.

  • Report writing and production of detailed inspection reports and drawings / sketches.

  • Involved in the development of the Major Bridges management system Pearl'.

  • Help prepare and develop risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) for BEAR Scotland's Major Bridges.

  • Work towards and gain Lantra Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme BICS' (NHSS31) Inspector qualification and then BICS' Senior Inspector qualification.

  • Undertake appropriate training (Work at Height, SMSTS, Confined Space, Rescue & First-Aid Training, Other)

    The ideal candidate should have experience in the Civil Engineering sector or equivalent, have a good understanding of Health & Safety procedures and hold a current Full UK driving license., Accredited Lantra Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme BICS' (NHSS31) Inspector or Senior Inspector is desirable but not essential.


  • The successful candidate will be required to work towards and gain BICS.
  • Experience in Bridge Inspection is desirable but not essential. On the job training will be given.

  • Candidates should be qualified to a minimum of HNC in Civil Engineering or another relevant discipline.

  • Prerequisite academic qualification to enable work towards professional accreditation of a recognised engineering or technical body e.g. ICE EngTech.
