Job Description

The Army United Kingdom offers a starting salary of £27,282 a year (after training). Master your craft and learn to use it all over the world. As a full-time soldier, you will be an entry-level Carpenter in the British Army, and your responsibilities include:

  • Planning carpentry and joinery tasks from sketches and applying them in the field

  • Learning to use and maintain workshop machinery

  • Preparing timber for use, manufacturing joints, using adhesives, producing windows, door frames and fitments

  • Carrying out general construction work including first-fix timber frames and second-fix joinery fitments

  • Constructing scaffolding, interpreting scaffold terms, erecting access scaffolds, and installing ladders

  • Installing partitions, floors, roofing, timber-framed buildings, formwork, and shoring

  • Studying for carpentry qualifications (including Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Carpentry and Joining (Military Engineering) and Level 2 apprenticeship)

Qualifications

  • Be between 16 years 6 months and 35 years 6 months

  • Have a GCSE Grade A-C/9-5 or Scottish National 5 in Maths, English Language, and one other subject

  • Be able to pass a basic fitness test

Benefits

Set yourself up for life. From the start of your training, you'll earn £27,282 a year, which will increase as you progress in your career. You don't need to have prior experience, as training will be provided.

Initial military training teaches you how to be a soldier—basic military training for Junior Soldiers, and adult basic training for Regular Soldiers. Following that, there are further training phases:

  • 12 weeks at the Royal School of Military Engineering, learning military engineering skills including demolition and bridge building

  • 21 weeks of carpentry training, including using machinery and hand tools to make timber building materials

You will also receive: 30 days of annual leave per year (plus bank holidays and extra leave after operations), free medical and dental care, lower living costs, and free gym and sports facilities. Normal working hours are typically 8:30 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, unless you're away on operations or training exercises.

In addition, you'll have opportunities to travel the world, participate in the Army's adventurous training, and dedicate time to sports you enjoy.

Get skills, get qualified, get confident. You Belong Here.
