Casual Craning Assistant

Stranraer Harbour

£12.29 per hour

We are looking to recruit enthusiastic and physically fit casual assistants to assist full time staff within the Harbours Service in undertaking the safe and efficient craning and transport of boats to and from the harbour and boat storage at Stranraer harbour.

Suitable candidates will need to be able to work as part of a team and a certain level of dextrousness is preferable as we use ratchets and other tools. Training will be given.

Good communication will help you engage with members of the public, boat owners and other staff to keep the craning zone safe in line with our safe operating procedures.

The work is tide dependent and we crane over High Water periods during working hours, with sessions/shifts likely to last five hours at a time maximum, some sessions being shorter for bespoke lifts.

Candidates will need to be prepared for everything the elements have to offer. Full PPE will be provided, but we do work on through the rain.

Activities during shifts include:

  • Establishing the safety zone around the lifting operations and ensuring it remains clear during all lifting operations.
  • Assisting senior harbour assistants in lifting operations including line handling to avoid boats swinging during lifting.
  • Cleaning of boats using a pressure washer.
  • Undertaking role of banks-person for boat transporter when moving boats to and from the secure compound to / from the crane.
  • Engage with boat owners, giving directions on safe operation.
  • Engage with public to explain safety issues, on-going operations, etc.
  • Other tasks associated with boat craning as directed by harbours service staff.

Craning boats is a physical and mental challenge, but it is fun and interesting work.

We look forward to receiving your application.
