Full Job Description

CEMETERY OPERATIVE


The Archdiocese of Glasgow require a motivated and diligent individual to join our Cemetery Operative Team.


The hours of work are Monday to Thursday 8am-4pm; Friday 8am-1pm. However (Friday afternoon and Saturday working will be required occasionally)


Previous experience in ground maintenance and operating with heavy machinery, such as mechanical excavators and dumper trucks, is required.

This is a physically demanding role working mainly outdoors in all weathers.


The Cemetery Operative takes responsibility of the entire cemetery grounds whilst also carrying out general maintenance. Duties include but are not limited to preparation and digging of graves, grounds maintenance including grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, pruning, and minor repairs and construction work.


Duties

All duties must be carried out in compliance with:

  1. The Health and Safety at Work Act
  2. Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments and Regulations and other legal requirements
  3. Codes of Practice
  4. Established diocesan procedures

All duties will be carried out in the working conditions normally inherent in the particular job; the frequency and allocation of the duties set out will be as designated by the diocese.

All necessary paperwork must be completed.

Employees where appropriate will be required to wear protective clothing and footwear.

If required to deputise for the Foreperson in his/her absence you will be expected to cover his/her duties accordingly.


Training

  1. Employees will accept any training to facilitate the undertaking of their duties. It is the responsibility of the diocese to ensure that employees have received the necessary training to enable them to undertake their duties in a safe manner.
  2. Employee will co-operate in work experience/training of similarly-graded employees and trainees.

In addition to the usual range of tools and equipment, powered hand tools and plant (including mechanical diggers) will be required, and appropriate safety gear must be worn while using the equipment.

The operating of equipment also covers inspection, routine maintenance and cleaning.

Using chemicals under direct supervision is included in the duties.


Duties - Specific

  1. To undertake, either individually or as a part of a team, all duties involved in the burial of the dead (for example, location, preparation and digging of graves, including shoring and shuttering etc.).
  2. To maintain the grounds and their surrounds (for example, grass-cutting, hedge trimming, planting and pruning).
  3. To give directions to members of public as appropriate.
  4. To attend and participate in interments when required, ensuring conduct and attire is suitable to the occasion.
  5. To perform ad-hoc duties as specified by the Manager or diocesan management.

NOTE: “All duties involved in the burial of the dead” includes circumstances where an existing grave is opened or reopened. The location of graves may be subject to verification by another employee designated by the diocese.


Reporting to the Cemetery Manager the successful applicant will need to be able to work under pressure and as part of a team.  

35 hours per week. Group personal pension scheme. Annual leave 20 – 25 days per annum, plus public holidays.
