About Hampden & Co

Hampden & Co was founded by an experienced team of bankers and became the first new private bank in over a quarter of a century when it opened in 2015. The bank offers clients a personal, professional banking service and is re-establishing the relationship that always existed between banker and client.

Our purpose is to help our clients achieve their aspirations by providing bespoke banking to our clients, their families and businesses, delivered through personal service by our expert team.

About the role

We have an excellent opportunity for a Credit Risk Manager to join our Risk & Compliance team.

Working with the bankers in situations where tailored support may be required to ensure the best outcome for the client and to reduce potential risk to the Bank’s assets is key. The Credit Risk Manager will consider and provide feedback / recommendations on lending proposals in accordance with the Bank’s Credit Policy and will sanction such proposals within their delegated authority, under the direction of the Head of Credit.

The ideal candidate will have strong commercial awareness to manage risk and excellent credit risk analysis skills. A track record of sanctioning high quality loans in a retail / private banking environment is desirable.

Additionally, whilst not a mandatory requirement, having held a delegated lending authority to sanction commercial lending requests and a proven record of executing this successfully would be advantageous. An understanding of Collections and Recoveries strategies is not essential but would also be beneficial.

The opportunity is suited to an individual who is motivated to be part of the continued growth of Hampden & Co.

The ideal candidate for the role will have:

·       Strong numerical and financial analytical skills.

·       Good working knowledge of credit regulatory landscape for banks.

·       Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to deliver difficult responses to bankers, business functions or management in a time pressured environment, in an assertive yet non-confrontational manner.

·       Self-motivated and a strong desire and ability to drive improvements.

·       Efficient in planning workloads in a resource constrained environment.

·       Effective coaching and mentoring skills.

Some of your main responsibilities/key duties will be:

·        Maintain a detailed knowledge of the Bank’s lending products and their inherent credit risks.

·        Sanction lending proposals within your Delegated Sanction Authority (DSA), and in accordance with the Bank’s Credit Policy.

·        Recommend to either approve or decline those proposals outside your DSA to the Head of Credit.

·        As a functional credit risk specialist, provide guidance and support to colleagues across the Bank on credit-risk-related matters, including the authorisation of referrals on ‘non-standard’ aspects of proposals within your DSA.

·        Complete oversight activity (including Quality Assurance) on sanctioning/annual review activities of Private Bankers in accordance with agreed procedures.

·        Work with colleagues in Credit Risk (and the wider Risk) Team to continuously improve processes and procedures, all within the correct change management/governance framework.

·        Keep up to date with credit risk regulatory requirements and ensure you comply with these.

·        Participate (from time-to-time) in training sessions designed to develop colleagues across the Bank in Credit Risk matters, including the mentoring of colleagues to help them succeed.

·        Ensure risk events such as breaches and operational losses are escalated and reported in accordance with policy.

·        Work collaboratively and effectively across the business:

o   Maintain appropriate independence and objectivity from the Banking Teams with the key focus of protecting the Bank and its clients whilst maintaining a commercial outlook in decision-making;

o   Build and maintain constructive and effective relationships across the business in line with the Bank’s culture and behaviours;

o   Assist in creating and maintaining a strong business-wide credit risk aware culture at all levels of the Company.
