Midlothian is Scotland’s fastest growing local authority area, and this is an exciting time to join the Economic Development Service as we further develop our Community Wealth Building approach.

The Economic Development Service also manages Business Gateway Midlothian so the postholder will have a wide remit, experiencing all aspects of supporting businesses and communities to thrive.

The postholder will interact with internal and external customers and stakeholders both digitally and in-person. They will manage the compliant processing of grant funding applications and provide accurate progress and financial reports and minutes of meetings.

The postholder will manage enquiries efficiently and professionally across several shared mailboxes. The postholder will be expected to support project leads on a range of Economic Development projects and, as part of a small team, deliver on other ad hoc activities associated with the delivery of the Service.

Experience of delivering a high quality of customer service is essential to ensure effective and efficient communications with stakeholders, as is the ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities, while maintaining high quality service delivery and continuous improvement.

This role is on a fixed term basis to 31/03/2027 due to external funding however the post may be extended if further funding can be secured.

The post would be best suited to candidates with experience working in a local authority /economic development environment.

A degree in economic development or an equivalent related discipline is essential.

Previous experience of working in business support, the skills economy and in partnership with other enterprise agencies alongside a working understanding of local businesses and representative organisations would be advantageous.

Jobholders may contribute to internal working parties considering the operational implications of initiatives, developments or changes in legislation therefore an understanding of the role of Local Government in economic development, developed communication skills and strong interpersonal skills, is desirable.

Working Pattern: Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm

Weeks per year: 52

Please note that it is Midlothian Councils policy that successful applicants will be appointed to the first point on the salary scale.

Based on 36 hours over 52 weeks per year, the minimum actual salary for this position is £40,500.03 per annum. 

Requirements

Compliance with the mandatory Cabinet Office PSN (Public Sector Network) Code of Connection requires the Council to meet a baseline personal security standard. This requires completion of a disclosure check for all employees who can access official information. The fee for this PSN Disclosure check will be met by you.

Please note that Disclosure Scotland has changed the way PVG certificates are issued. You will be notified by email from Disclosure Scotland that your certificate is available to view. Once you have viewed your certificate you will be allowed to share this with your employer and it is only available for 14 days from the first day you have viewed the certificate. If you do not grant access to Midlothian Council to view before access is removed, a further application will need to be generated, and this will incur an additional cost.
