Full Job Description
ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Tutors
City Wide
Salary: £25.29 per hour
Hours: 0 per week
We are seeking professional and dedicated ESOL Tutors to join our tertiary staffing pool and deliver high-quality teaching in our community-based adult ESOL classes.
We offer classes at levels from Absolute Beginner (including ESOL Literacies) to Upper Intermediate, with a growing number of our learners having little experience of formal education. All our ESOL courses are geared towards helping learners to gain the language they need to help them in their daily lives in Scotland, whatever their starting point. Tutors are encouraged to use a learner-centred, social practice approach.
Each session is 2.5 hours- this covers 2 hours of teaching/contact time and 30 minutes of preparation and administration. While we offer a small number of classes online, most of our teaching takes place in person at various locations throughout the city. For this reason, tutors must be able and willing to travel to venues outside the City Centre, such as South Queensferry, West Pilton, Moredun, Craigmillar, Granton, Leith, Oxgangs, and Wester Hailes. Being flexible and ready to travel ensures that we can reach learners where they are and provide the support they need in their local communities.
Classes are delivered Monday to Friday, mornings, afternoons and evenings. We also deliver some classes on Saturdays.
We anticipate that the interviews for these posts will be held at Waverley Court (EH8 8BG) towards the end of June 2026 with a view to staff joining the pool for September 2026 classes.
Please refer to the job description in this job advert.
This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.
We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce where everyone feels valued and able to be their best. We particularly encourage applications from women for senior roles, as well as people from minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities or neurodivergent people, care experienced people, carers and LGBT+ people across all levels of the organisation, all of whom are currently underrepresented. All applicants will be considered fairly based on skills and experience. Disabled and care-experienced applicants who meet the minimum job criteria will be guaranteed an interview.
