After 1 August 2020, Education Authorities can only appoint the following categories of people as permanent Head Teachers:

  1. People who have achieved the Standard for Headship.
  2. People appointed as permanent Head Teachers of a public school, a grant-aided school or an independent school on or before 1 August 2020.

A person who has not yet achieved the Standard for Headship may be appointed as a head teacher, provided the appointment does not exceed 30 months.

Prior to confirming appointment, we will require successful candidates to become members of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme.

This position is classified as a regulated role. As such, an Overseas Criminal Record Check may be required depending on your nationality and recent residency history. Specifically, this check will be necessary if you do not meet both of the following criteria:

  • You must be a national of the United Kingdom or one of the following countries: Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Hungary, Greece, France, Ireland, Italy, Spain, or Poland.
  • You must not have lived or worked in any country outside of the UK or those listed above for a period of three months or more, while aged 18 years or over, within the past five years.

Please note that it is your responsibility to obtain the Overseas Criminal Record Check, and you will be required to cover any associated costs.

Requirements

  1. Full registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland as a primary teacher.
  2. The Standard for Headship (for Head Teachers taking up their first permanent Head Teacher post from 1st August 2020 under Section 28 of the Education Scotland Act 2016)

1. At least three years successful experience as a teacher or more senior position in a primary school.

2. Experience of participation in curriculum development, school self-evaluation and development planning.

3. Evidence of involvement in school improvement

4. Evidence of recent involvement in professional development.
