Full Job Description

The Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) supports the teaching and learning process by working closely with teachers, pupils, and wider school staff. The role involves taking a more independent and proactive position within the classroom, contributing to planning, delivering, and assessing learning activities, and supporting the overall progress and wellbeing of pupils. What you will be doing

  • Supporting teachers in planning, preparing, and delivering learning activities across the curriculum.
  • Leading whole-class, group, and individual learning sessions under the direction of a teacher.
  • Providing targeted literacy, numeracy, and intervention support to pupils who need additional help.
  • Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupil progress to inform teaching and next steps.
  • Acting as a subject or specialist support assistant, offering expertise in designated curriculum areas.
  • Supervising and guiding other support staff to ensure consistent, high-quality classroom practice.
  • Preparing and maintaining learning environments, resources, and materials to support effective teaching.
  • Supporting school activities such as educational visits, events, and wider administrative or organisational tasks.

    SCQF Level 6 or equivalent required
  • A solid understanding of teaching and learning strategies, with the ability to support, deliver, and adapt activities to meet diverse pupil needs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with pupils, teachers, support staff, and families.
  • Confidence in leading groups or whole classes, managing behaviour positively, and promoting an inclusive learning environment.
  • Good organisational skills, reliability, and the ability to take initiative when preparing resources, supporting lessons, and contributing to assessment.
  • Driving licence required
