Orkney Health and Social Care Partnership is committed to improving outcomes for our children, young people and families, and to delivering Scotland’s Promise.

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional individual to the post of Improvement and Reviewing Officer. The role of Improvement and Reviewing Officer is a fundamental role within the management structure within OHAC.

The role will require independent and autonomous practice, with the ability to ensure multi-agency partners are fulfilling their roles and responsibilities with regard to the care, support and protection of vulnerable members of the community.

The role will have a dual focus, encompassing responsibilities for the chairing of service users initially and review protection planning meetings/ conferences. The role will also include responsibilities for leading on improvement work within OHAC.

We are seeking someone with strong communication and interpersonal skills who has the ability to manage change and contribute to policy development. You will demonstrate an ability to establish positive relationships with our partner agencies and be able to maintain them for the benefit of the children of Orkney. Significant and relevant experience as a Social Worker with children and young people and child protection practice is essential.

Living in Orkney brings its own benefits, being an archipelago of 70 beautiful islands, of which 17 are inhabited. As a genuinely wonderful place to live, Orkney offers unique wildlife, amazing scenery and real opportunity to experience a wide range of cultural and sporting activities. There is something for everyone; state-of-the-art leisure facilities, various clubs and societies, and an excellent education system creates our strong community spirit. It’s no surprise that Orkney has been voted the best place to live in Scotland for eight years running.

This post is considered Regulated Work with Children and Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. It is an offence therefore to apply if you are barred from working with children and protected adults. In addition to this, if you have lived or worked in any country outside the UK in the past 10 years, there may be a requirement for an overseas police check.

You must be able to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational needs of the service.

This post is subject to a Level 2 Disclosure Check with PVG for working in a regulated role with children and protected adults.

For further information please contact Darren Morrow, Head of Children, Families and Justice Services and Chief Social Work Officer on extension 2601 or email: Darren.Morrow@orkney.gov.uk

Closing Date: 23:59 on Sunday 25 January 2026

Please note that interview and relocation expenses will be paid for this post in accordance with Council Policy.

Forget images of remote islands - Orkney is well served by superb modern transport links. Forget the idea of a few people in the middle of no-where - Orkney is home to over 20,000 people. Orkney may bring to mind certain images, but the chances are they are, to say the least, a little off the mark. Sure, we're a bit off the beaten track, but the needs of our community are just the same as anywhere else. And, as a result, the opportunities we can offer you are comparable with those you'll find elsewhere. Of course, there are a few differences: for starters Orkney consists of 100,000 hectares spread over 70+ small islands (19 of which are inhabited), so, like our service users, you'll need to make the most of the transportation links which are vital to Orkney's social and economic well-being. Orkney Islands Council may be the smallest local authority in Scotland, but we can offer some big challenges. And big opportunities. This could be your big chance to make the move, and make a difference. OIC has an impact on many aspects of everyday life. With around 1,800 staff, we are also the county’s biggest employer.
