About the Role

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Marine Mechanic to join our Lowland Operations team in Falkirk. You will Using technical expertise manage the servicing and maintenance all Scottish Canals vessels and floating plant throughout the canal network.

The role is offered on a Permanent basis, working 5 days on 3 days off 35 hours per week.


About the Reward

This role offers a progressive starting salary of £36,776 (Band D) plus a Variable Working Allowance of 11.25% and an £850 Outdoor Working Allowance.

Primary responsibilities of the role:

Full resourcing responsibility for all parts, equipment and fluids required to carry out the above functions for all projects. Resource and manage financial implications for the above through internal management


Assess the need to re-prioritise tasks and resources as work progresses, seeking appropriate guidance from Lowlands Canal Manager on reprioritisation of tasks within the work programme.


Plan works to ensure adequate levels of RAMS, PPE, tools and equipment are available to carryout works efficiently and safely.


Use your experience and judgement when issues need upward referral and to co-ordinate and deliver agreed works. Where required, carry out inspections, assessments, reports which provide prioritised and costed recommendations for continued safe operational serviceability of Scottish Canal’s aquatic fleet.


Comply with Scottish Canals Health & Safety policy and defined standards, report incidents, accidents and near misses.


Complete point of work risk assessments and adjust work methods where appropriate.


Assist in drawing up Risk Assessments, Method Statements, Permits to Work and Isolation Method Statements for works relevant to area of expertise and knowledge.


Prioritise workload and other competing elements of multiple planned preventative maintenance, minor works, projects, and contracts in agreement with your line manager.

Qualifications and knowledge required:

  • Marine Mechanic
  • Extensive qualifiable experience
  • HGV mechanic
  • Auto mechanic
  • Agricultural engineering

  • Breakdown analysis
  • Analogue engines
  • Computer controlled engines
  • Welding / fabrication
  • Propulsion and drivelines
  • Harvesting plant
  • Auto electrics
  • HGV commercial engines
  • Working with Regulators (MCA, VOSA etc)
  • Working with hydraulics
  • Plant Maintenance
