Full Job Description

Working in our large, dynamic general practice you'll liaise closely with our other phlebotomist and other members of the clinical team, including GPs, nurses and our specialist paramedic. Our clinical team sits within the broader, 50-strong Practice team which also includes our Reception team and other administrators. For us, it all starts with our team - because it's our team who provide care to patients. We try hard to make this a place where people want to work, with regular team events planned and a supportive atmosphere in the office.,

  • Provide an efficient, caring and courteous phlebotomy service to patients.
  • Collect blood samples by venepuncture and blood pressure readings, as required by members of the Practice clinical team or by healthcare colleagues in other settings
  • Ensuring all policies and protocols for handling, labelling, and documenting the collection of specimens are adhered to, in a timely way.
  • Accurate recording of consultation in patient notes
  • Preparation of clinical equipment and stocking of consultation room.

    We're looking for a patient-focused, confident phlebotomist with sound IT and time management skills, and previous experience in a General Practice or other NHS setting, to join our friendly team., Have completed a recognised phlebotomy training programme
  • Have previous phlebotomy experience in a healthcare environment
  • Be IT literate, with sound knowledge of Microsoft Office and relevant clinical IT systems, ideally including Vision, ICE and Docman
  • Have excellent time management skills, with the ability to manage a busy patient list each day as allocated by the Practice Manager
  • Have excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate well with patients of all ages and backgrounds, putting each individual patient at ease
  • Have excellent written communication skills and attention to detail, with the ability to accurately record interactions appropriately in the correct patient notes.
  • Be able to work calmly under pressure, and to handle challenging interactions in a compassionate and professional manner.
  • Be able to handle sensitive patient information in a confidential way, in line with NHS requirements
  • Be able to work within your competency level, escalating issues to Practice nurses or the duty doctor as appropriate.
  • Have strong interpersonal and organisational skills, which enable you to develop effective working relationships with the rest of the Practice team.
  • Be able to work in line with Practice health & safety procedures, particularly those relevant to phlebotomy including infection control, needlestick injury protocols etc.
  • Have an awareness and understanding of safeguarding skills, including escalation procedures.
  • Be able to work well within a team and have a strong commitment to our efforts to create a positive culture, for the benefit of both patients and staff
  • Be able to demonstrate a good level of educational achievement, including Maths and English, at standard grade or equivalent.
  • Be able to take responsibility for the safety of yourself and others at work, in line with Practice protocols.
  • Be willing to undertake appropriate training and development, including attending Practice meetings where possible.
  • It'd be nice if you:
  • Had experience of working in General Practice, although this isn't essential
  • Had a Drivers' Licence and access to your own vehicle.
  • A successful PVG check is required for this post, along with existing clearance to work in Scotland.

    Riverside Medical Practice is based in Musselburgh, close to both Edinburgh city centre and the beaches of East Lothian. We're a busy surgery with 20,000 patients, located in an area with significant health inequality. Our team are all people who are are passionate about working in this type of environment and who really want to make a difference. The practice is based in a purpose-built health centre with plentiful consulting rooms, kitchen, sun terrace and onsite parking. The team includes four supportive GP partners, a great call handling team and other usual operational support staff. This is a well-organised practice, with mature systems and processes in place which allow our team to do their jobs to the very best of their abilities.     Up to 15 hours per week - flexible in terms of days and shift patterns, although all hours must be before 3pm - £14.08 per hour - Short-term locum basis
