Science Technician

St Columba’s School in Kilmacolm enjoys an excellent reputation for academic standards, pastoral care and extra-curricular provision. We are looking for a qualified Science Technician who has relevant experience and qualifications and the enthusiasm and commitment to perform this vital role within the School community. 

The person we are looking for will be able:

• to work collaboratively with a close-knit team to provide high quality support for staff and pupils
• to use initiative, work independently and prioritise tasks

Key Tasks

• Preparation of materials and equipment for Biology, Chemistry and Physics lessons

• Liaise with teaching staff regarding timetables, equipment requirements and work plans • Apply relevant health and safety regulations, including COSHH requirements, and maintain appropriate records

• Maintain and repair equipment and laboratory apparatus – escalate to external companies as required

• Ensure that equipment is provided, collected, properly cleaned and chemicals and other materials are appropriately stored, following manual handling guidance and utilising procedure and support in place

• Provide technical advice to teaching staff and pupils

• Manage stock control of chemicals and equipment including disposal in compliance with regulations

• Support the Head of Faculty with ordering, invoicing and deliveries and communicate with the Finance Department as necessary in line with this

• Support with the care of plants and animals

• Obtaining materials via local purchasing

• Carry out Level 3 work as outlined in SSERC for Microbiology

• Attend relevant CPD sessions and research to keep up to date with new requirements  

Qualifications and Experience Required

• Educated to HNC level or equivalent

• Qualification to carry out Level 3 Microbiology work or willingness to train to meet requirements

• Minimum of two years' experience in a similar environment

• A friendly, professional manner

• Ability to multi-task and prioritise workload
