Full Job Description
Senior Environmental & Sustainability Advisor
Location: Glasgow
Contract: Initial 6 Months, with potential extension
Engagement: Fixed Term Contract, PAYE Temporary or Inside IR35 Contractor
We are recruiting a Senior Environmental & Sustainability Advisor for an established heavy engineering and manufacturing organisation in Glasgow.
This is a senior, environmentally focused position for someone who can take ownership of the environmental agenda within a complex operational environment.
The organisation already has an established Health & Safety function. The requirement now is for an experienced Environmental professional who can provide the specialist knowledge and leadership needed to develop its Environmental Management System, strengthen environmental compliance and support the business on its journey towards ISO 14001 accreditation.
A key part of the role will be assessing the organisation's current environmental position and helping to build the systems, processes and documentation required to establish a robust Environmental Management System.
What will you be doing?
You will work closely with the Head of HSEQ and operational teams across the business, with responsibilities including:
- Developing and implementing an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
- Supporting the organisation's journey towards ISO 14001 accreditation
- Developing and maintaining Environmental Aspects & Impacts
- Reviewing environmental legal and compliance requirements
- Conducting environmental audits, inspections and risk assessments
- Supporting environmental permitting, compliance and regulator engagement
- Developing environmental procedures, controls and improvement plans
- Monitoring environmental performance and identifying opportunities for improvement
- Supporting sustainability, carbon reduction and wider environmental initiatives
- Monitoring and reporting environmental KPIs
- Supporting environmental considerations associated with site development and operational activities
- Working closely with engineering, production, procurement, H&S and senior leadership
- Providing environmental guidance, coaching and support across the organisation
- Engaging with employees, contractors, regulators and other external stakeholders
What are we looking for?
We are particularly interested in speaking with experienced Environmental or Environmental & Sustainability professionals who have worked within a complex industrial environment.
Ideally, you will have:
- Significant experience in an Environmental Management, Environmental Advisor or Environmental Sustainability position
- Practical experience of developing or implementing ISO 14001, ideally including involvement through to accreditation
- A recognised environmental qualification such as NEBOSH Environmental, ISEP/IEMA, Environmental Management degree/diploma or equivalent
- Strong knowledge of environmental legislation and regulatory compliance
- Experience developing and managing Environmental Aspects & Impacts
- Environmental auditing and inspection experience
- Knowledge of sustainability, carbon reduction and environmental performance
- Experience working with environmental regulators
- Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills
- The confidence to operate autonomously and provide environmental leadership across the business
Experience within heavy manufacturing, engineering, construction, energy, oil & gas, renewables, nuclear, marine or another complex industrial environment would be particularly relevant.
The person
We are looking for someone who is approachable, practical and confident, with the credibility to engage equally well with operational employees, engineering teams and senior leadership.
You should be comfortable challenging existing practices when required, able to explain the reasoning behind your recommendations and confident taking ownership of the environmental agenda rather than waiting to be directed.
Contract
The initial requirement is for 6 months, although there is potential for the assignment to extend depending on both the individual and the requirements of the business.
The organisation is flexible around engagement and can consider candidates interested in a Fixed Term Contract, PAYE temporary assignment or contracting inside IR35.
If you are an experienced Environmental professional looking for an opportunity where you can genuinely influence how environmental management and sustainability are developed within a major industrial organisation, we would be keen to hear from you.
