Full Job Description

Senior Infrastructure Specialist (Microsoft 365)

Grade 8 (£47,389.29 - £56,535.57)

Full time, Permanent

Abertay is a modern university with a global outlook, rooted in its local and national communities. We have made our mark with high quality, well-directed teaching and research, and a stimulating and enriching experience for our students.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward-thinking IT Services team and play a key role in the University's digital transformation agenda. Working closely with colleagues across the institution, you will help ensure our Microsoft 365 environment is secure, well-governed, efficient and ready to support emerging technologies such as Microsoft Copilot and other AI-enabled services.

The University now seeks to appoint a Senior Infrastructure Specialist (Microsoft 365) to lead the governance, administration, optimisation and continuous improvement of our Microsoft 365 environment, with a particular focus on SharePoint Online, Purview, Teams, OneDrive, and AI readiness.

Are you an experienced Microsoft 365 specialist looking for an opportunity to shape the future of digital collaboration, information governance and AI adoption within a modern university?

Reporting to the Infrastructure Manager, a significant part of the role will support InfoSmart, Abertay's information management project, which is improving how information is organised, governed, secured and accessed across Microsoft 365. You will develop practical governance standards, design and implement appropriate information architecture, support migration and improvement projects and ensure the University's information assets are managed effectively and responsibly.

You will:

  • Lead the administration, governance and support of SharePoint Online and related Microsoft 365 productivity and collaboration apps and services.
  • Develop and maintain standards for site governance, lifecycle management, permissions, ownership and content organisation.
  • Design and improve information architecture, metadata structures and compliance controls.
  • Support the implementation of information protection, retention, records management and data governance controls using Microsoft Purview.
  • Drive improvements that enable the responsible adoption of Microsoft Copilot and other AI-enabled capabilities.
  • Provide technical leadership for Microsoft 365 projects, migrations and service improvements.
  • Develop practical guidance, standards and documentation to support users and service owners.
  • Work closely with stakeholders, suppliers and colleagues across the University to deliver secure, sustainable and user focused solutions.

You will have substantial experience working with Microsoft 365 within a complex organisation and be confident balancing technical, governance and business requirements.

You should be able to demonstrate:

  • Strong experience administering SharePoint Online and related Microsoft 365 services.
  • Experience managing Microsoft Teams, OneDrive and collaboration environments.
  • Knowledge of information architecture, permissions management, site lifecycle management and governance frameworks.
  • Experience using Microsoft Purview for information protection, records management, retention and compliance.
  • Understanding of Microsoft 365 security controls and information governance principles.
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting, automation and service optimisation.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A proactive approach to problem solving, service improvement and governance.

Why Join Abertay?

Abertay University is a modern, innovative and distinctive institution renowned for its strengths in technology, digital innovation and student experience. You will join a collaborative and supportive environment where your expertise will have a direct impact on how information, collaboration and AI capabilities are delivered across the University.

This role offers the opportunity to shape the strategic direction of Microsoft 365 at Abertay, working at the intersection of modern collaboration, information governance, cybersecurity and AI. It is a highly influential position where your expertise will directly inform the University's approach to digital transformation, information management and adoption of emerging Microsoft technologies.

In return, we offer:

  • Competitive salary
  • Generous annual leave entitlement of 33 days plus 8 University closure days.
  • Membership of the Abertay University Pension Scheme.
  • Hybrid working arrangements.
  • Ongoing professional development and learning opportunities.
  • The opportunity to lead and influence a significant Microsoft 365 and information management transformation programme.

If you are passionate about Microsoft 365, information governance, digital transformation and the safe adoption of AI technologies, we'd love to hear from you.

If you believe you have the skills and experience for this exciting and challenging role, please submit your application through our online recruitment system.

Please note that we will only accept applications through our online recruitment system.
