Senior Ro-Ro Engineer – Shore Support
Location: Gourock
Salary: £77,168 per annum
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Department: Fleet Management – Shore Support & Logistics
Reports to: Shore Support Manager
Grade: Technical Grade 1
Travel: CalMac network, vessels and ship repair yards
CalMac Ferries Limited is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Ro-Ro Engineer to lead our Shore Support Ro-Ro Engineering team.
This is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable and compliant operation of Ro-Ro cargo handling systems across CalMac's fleet of Major and Small Vessels. Working closely with vessel crews, Fleet Groups, contractors and repair facilities, you will provide technical leadership and operational oversight to support vessel availability and service reliability across Scotland's lifeline ferry network.
As a senior member of the Shore Support team, you will lead a skilled team of engineers, driving high standards of safety, service delivery and continuous improvement.
What You'll Do
- Lead and develop the Shore Support Ro-Ro Engineering team.
- Ensure the safe, efficient and compliant delivery of Ro-Ro engineering activities.
- Manage engineering support across vessels, workshops and ship repair facilities.
- Plan and coordinate engineering resources to meet operational requirements.
- Ensure all work is controlled through the Shore Support Works Management Process.
- Support vessel availability through effective maintenance, defect resolution and technical support.
- Promote a strong safety culture through leadership, coaching and compliance monitoring.
- Drive continuous improvement in engineering performance, quality and service delivery.
- Manage technical documentation, reporting and engineering records.
- Build strong relationships with operational and technical stakeholders across the business.
What We're Looking For
You will be an experienced engineering professional with strong leadership skills and a passion for safety, reliability and continuous improvement.
Essential
- Engineering qualification in a relevant discipline (Mechanical, Marine, Electrical or equivalent).
- Significant experience maintaining cargo handling equipment, or large-scale mechanical, hydraulic or control systems.
- Previous experience leading or supervising engineering teams in high pressure environments.
- Strong understanding of health, safety and environmental requirements.
- Knowledge of marine Class and statutory requirements.
- Excellent planning, organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic operational environment.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable
- Experience of Ro-Ro systems and vessel cargo handling equipment.
- Experience supporting vessel repairs, refits or drydock activities.
- Familiarity with maintenance and works management systems.
- Experience working within the maritime, shipping or ferry sector.

Working arrangements
The role is based in Gourock and is nominally worked on weekdays. Arrangements will also be required for evening, night and weekend working to support vessels in remaining in, or returning to, service.
Travel across the CalMac network and to vessels and ship repair yards is required.
