Senior Ro-Ro Engineer - Shore Support

Location: Gourock with travel throughout the CalMac network, vessels and shipyards

Salary: £77,168 per annum

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

About the Role

CalMac Ferries Limited is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Ro-Ro Engineer to join our Shore Support team.

This is a unique opportunity to provide technical leadership across one of the UK's largest Ro-Ro ferry fleets, supporting the safe and reliable operation of vessel systems that are critical to Scotland's lifeline services.

Working across multiple vessels, ports and shipyards, you will lead a team of engineers responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair and reliability of large-scale mechanical, structural, hydraulic and control systems. These include ramps, doors, hoistable vehicle decks, lifting equipment and associated vessel systems that enable the safe movement of passengers, vehicles and freight.

This role combines technical leadership, engineering judgement, defect resolution, contractor management and strategic asset support within a complex operational environment.

What You'll Do

• Lead, coach and develop a team of engineering professionals.
• Provide technical leadership and engineering support across the Ro-Ro fleet.
• Support the reliability, maintenance and lifecycle management of vessel systems and equipment.
• Investigate defects, identify root causes and develop effective engineering solutions.
• Specify, plan and supervise repair and maintenance activities carried out by contractors and shipyards.
• Support major repairs, vessel refits, dry dockings and fleet improvement initiatives.
• Work closely with vessel management teams, operational departments, contractors, equipment manufacturers and regulatory bodies.
• Ensure engineering activities are delivered safely, efficiently and in compliance with company procedures and statutory requirements.
• Monitor engineering performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability, availability and maintainability.
• Maintain accurate technical records, reports and engineering documentation.
• Promote a strong safety culture through visible leadership and continuous improvement.

Essential

• Degree, HND or equivalent qualification in an engineering discipline.
• Significant experience supporting complex operational assets within a safety-critical environment.
• Proven experience leading and developing engineering teams.
• Experience managing engineering maintenance, repairs or asset management activities.
• Strong understanding of health, safety and environmental requirements.
• Excellent engineering judgement and structured problem-solving capability.
• Experience managing competing priorities within an operational environment.
• Strong communication, planning and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable

• Experience within maritime, port equipment, rail, defence, utilities, offshore, manufacturing or heavy engineering sectors.
• Experience supporting large structural, mechanical, hydraulic, lifting or control systems.
• Experience with electro-hydraulic equipment and associated control systems.
• Experience managing major repairs, dry dock activities, refits or engineering projects.
• Knowledge of reliability, asset management and defect investigation techniques.
• Understanding of marine regulations, Classification Society requirements or statutory compliance.

Working Arrangements

The role is based in Gourock and is primarily worked on weekdays. Flexibility is required, including evening, night and weekend working, to support operational requirements across the fleet.

Travel throughout the CalMac network, including visits to vessels, ship repair yards and contractor facilities, will be required.
